Morgan silver dollars were minted between 1878 and 1921, with a noteworthy interruption between 1905 and 1920. The 1921-dated coins are the most usual, and there exists a significant collector market for pristine, uncirculated specimens of the rarer dates and mint marks. Morgan dollars are second only to Lincoln Cents in collector popularity. The large sizing, design and inexpensive nature of most dates of the Morgan dollar makes them very attractive.
The coin is named after George T. Morgan, its designer.

Many think mint collecting to be a pleasurable interest and also provides the collector with increases in economic value. Coins are collected both for their nostalgic and historic properties, as well as for investing reasons. The Morgan Silver dollar is rich in a history that can be likened to that of Cinderella, by way of a rags to wealth story. In order to fully realise the value of these coins, people must understand the history surrounding them. (http://www.christianet.com/bullion/morgansilverdollar.htm)
More than 100 million of the Morgan were minted in diverse mints around the country at different times. From San Francisco to Philadelphia where they are minted up to the present day. Relatively inexpensive, this was a mint that was introduced in 1878 mainly due to political force per unit area from ash gray mine owners to reinstitute silver dollars after the product had been halted five yrs earlier. The lobbying was successful and the U.S. authorities of the day passed the Bland-Alluison Act resulting in the government purchasing millions of ounces of silver to make into silver dollar coins.
